As the final hours of the spring session ticked down, Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner railed against Democrats for failing to send him a budget and for letting the state government stalemate spill into its 24th month.
The public scolding came after Rauner had spent time working to ensure that a Democrat-led attempt to pass a spending plan with multiple tax increases never made it to his desk.
With a 2018 re-election bid already in full swing, Rauner is running on the idea that he's standing in the way of Democrats intent on "sticking it to taxpayers."
When Senate Democrats approved a budget with $5.4 billion in tax hikes after growing frustrated with what they said were endless delays and excuses, Rauner blasted them last week. As House Democrats were behind closed doors on Memorial Day considering whether to vote for the tax hikes, Rauner's budget director sent a memo warning them not to support it because the governor would get out his veto pen.
The state's pre-eminent labor organization endorsed J.B. Pritzker on Tuesday, solidifying his status as the early front-runner in a crowded and increasingly bitter race for the 2018 Democratic governor nomination.
The unusually early move by the Illinois AFL-CIO, coming nine months before the March primary election, is a significant political boost for Pritzker, a billionaire entrepreneur and investor who has vowed to self-fund his campaign and spend to elect Democratic House and Senate candidates. The union backing gives him much-needed boots on the ground.

Democratic governor candidate Chris Kennedy on Tuesday went after some of the biggest players in Illinois Democratic politics — though pointedly not by name — in calling for changes in a local property tax system that he called rigged and likened to "extortion."
Reading from prepared remarks for more than 33 minutes to a few hundred people at the South Side's Harold Washington Cultural Center, Kennedy called for changes in the law to separate politicians from property tax appeal work and campaign donations.
Kennedy wants to ban elected officials from also holding outside jobs as property tax appeal lawyers. He would prohibit property tax appeal lawyers from making political contributions to local property assessors. In addition, he would ban local assessors from holding a major role in a political party.
In a rousing, 40-minute Bronzeville speech, Kennedy called Democratic opponent J.B. Pritzker the poster boy for property tax shenanigans. He said the assessment reduction billionaire Pritzker wrangled on an empty home that he bought next door to his Gold Coast mansion could only happen in Illinois.
That is where, he said, “a billionaire can have a million dollar mansion reclassified as dilapidated in the most expensive block, in the most expensive street, in the most expensive neighborhood, in one of the most expensive cities in the world.”
“All he needed was the right lawyers to avoid paying his fair share,”

Rishi Shah, who quit college to pursue entrepreneurial dreams, became a billionaire last week. And his business partner, Shradha Agarwal, is close behind.
Their windfall came with a $600 million infusion of venture capital into Outcome Health, the Chicago health care tech company they founded in 2006. It’s now valued at $5.6 billion.
Outcome Health installs touchscreens in doctor’s offices and uses specialized software to help physicians and patients make treatment decisions. Health care marketers and pharmaceutical companies use them too.
“It’s changing the life of a doctor,” Shah said in an interview about the technology.
He and Agarwal have been dogged in building their business. Last week’s investment came primarily from Chicago-based Pritzker Group, Goldman Sachs and CapitalG, which is connected to Google.
Not since Groupon, has a company raised that kind of capital in a single round of funding. In 2011, Groupon raised $950 million from investors in a fifth round of funding. For Outcome Health, it’s the first infusion of investment money.

WASHINGTON — Fired FBI Director James Comey testified Thursday that he was "confused" and "concerned" when President Donald Trump told the public he was firing him for undermining the morale of the agency he had led since 2013.
"Those were lies, plain and simple," Comey said.
The Trump administration, he said, "chose to defame me and, more importantly, the FBI by saying that the organization was in disarray, that it was poorly led, that the workforce had lost confidence in its leader."
